Session 4 focussed on resilience, entitled ‘thriving in good times AND in adversity’. We started off by exploring a quote, ‘you can’t stop the waves but you can learn to surf them’, Miah should be able to explain how this is a metaphor for the adversity we unavoidably come up against throughout life, that we cannot stop but can learn to deal with.

Next, Miah listed some challenges she has faced in the past, as a way to get her to recognise that she is constantly dealing with things she may find scary or challenging. We looked at how our beliefs about an adversity can lead to either positive or negative consequences - Miah chose to use her upcoming Piano exam on Friday as the focus for these examples.
Miah recorded the negative beliefs she was telling herself and how they may impact her performance and result in a negative outcome, and then we flipped this on its head and replaced her current negative beliefs with positive ones so that they help us to achieve a better outcome - emphasising the fact that we often perform at our belief level NOT our talent level,

We then explored ways in which we can disputes negative beliefs before they result in a negative outcome, and the how we feel once these beliefs have been disputed. This model is described as the ABCDE of Resilience:
A- adversity
B- belief about adversity
C- consequences of belief
D- dispute the belief
E- Emotion or effect once belief has been disputed.
A 逆境

Miah struggled to try to think in a more positive mindset during the ABCDE of resilience and I could tell she is very nervous about the upcoming exam. When disputing the beliefs she was able to recognise that there isn’t much evidence for these negative beliefs about her ability as she said her teacher had said’ I know you can do it, you just need more practice’ and she mentioned that you had overheard her playing and had commented on how much she’d improved.
Miah was able to recognise that telling herself she is bad at piano and will fail her exam is not a helpful belief to hold onto and that it means even if she is improving, she is unable to see it. She mentioned this has had a negative effect on her confidence and self esteem.

Miah has set herself a goal to work on this over the week, so that she is able to go into her exam feeling confident. She has written out 3 mantras that she plans to repeat to herself when she is feeling nervous; I can do it, I am proud of my achievements whatever the outcome and I am good enough as I am.
She may also find it helpful to repeat the ‘resilience catch’ game we played in which someone throws a ball at her quoting one of her negative beliefs/ fears and she throws the ball back, with a counter positive belief.
